CLASSESThe Avalon Kennel Club offers training classes for your canine pals. Classes start mid September, November & January of each year. The following classes are offered and proceed subject to sufficient class enrolment. Basic Obedience (Purebred and Non-Purebred) dogs. This is an entry level for obedience training. The handler and the dog will learn the techniques of basic obedience training. Advanced Basic Obedience (Purebred and Non-Purebred) dogs. This is an advanced level of obedience training where all the techniques learned in basic training along with new exercises are introduced and training patterns are developed. Trials Obedience (Purebred and Non-Purebred) dogs. This is an advanced level of obedience training where all the obedience techniques you and your canine pal have learned are grouped into a series of pre-set exercises that you would be expected to perform as an exhibitor in CKC obedience trials. The class will also be divided into Pre-Novice & Novice, Open & Utility subject to sufficient enrolment for each class. (Only dogs that are eligible to be registered with the CKC can compete in events held under the rules of The Canadian Kennel Club) Conformation (Purebred) dogs. This is a structured class wherein the handler and canine pal will learn the proper ring techniques of showing a specific breed in a dog show. This includes “free stack”; when to bait (or animate) your dog; “gaiting”; and specific breed styles of presentation to judges along with other dog showing techniques. You will also learn a new language. It is called “dog show lingo”, where “bitch” is not a nasty word, “croup” is not a bad cough. Puppy Socialization (Purebred and Non-Purebred) dogs. In this class young puppies meet and socialize with other breeds of dogs. You will learn very basic commands such as sit and stay and come. Grooming tips are introduced and general puppy questions are answered. For your pets’ safety, puppies must have their inoculations. Canine Good Neighbour (Purebred & Non-Purebred) dogs. This set of classes are offered subject to enrolment which is sanctioned by the CKC. Dogs and handlers will learn basic skills and will be tested on the skills and techniques learned. Two of our club members are Official CKC Evaluators and can test the handlers and dogs in this program. Once the handler and dog pass the prescribed test, the Canadian Kennel Club will issue a certificate and badge in recognition of the accomplishment. This program is open to Purebred and Non-purebred dogs. Junior Handling Classes. This class is for children ages 4 -18 and their dogs to learn the techniques of dog showing and obedience. Competitions are held at each dog show an obedience trial for awards, ribbons and prizes. A provincial competition is held each year and a representative is chosen to represent the province at the national competition.
