NOTES:

1. From Blaketown (http://www.k12.nf.ca/stgeorgeshigh/Blaketown/) Anecdotes page: "Blaketown, Fall of 1893 - The Hon. Sir Robert Bond visited the settlement today calling in at different houses. People did not expect him so soon and no preparations were made. After he had passed down to Smith's all the people congregated in front of Nathaniel Osbourne's house and welcomed his return. As he came in sight joy guns were firing and cheer after cheer given. Mr. Bond addressed the gathering and then drove back to Whitbourne. (John Gosse Files). "

2. From Blaketown Forestry page: "Several sawmills were in operation at various locations. One of the first was owned and operated by Nathaniel Osborne. This was a water-driven mill located on the brook flowing from Mill Pond, (near today's Moorland Motel) __hence the name, "Mill Pond". Rough lumber produced at the mill was sent to markets in St. John's via the nearby railroad at "Osborne's siding", a siding built for the Osborne mill (and other nearby mills), hence the name "Osborne's Siding". He also operated a mill on the "Mill Brook", a small brook flowing from Crooked Pond into the eastern side of Blaketown Pond - hence the name, "Mill Brook". "
...
"Several mills powered by gasoline engines were in operation at various locations along the western side of Blaketown Pond. Owners and operators of those mills included Eldred Mercer, William John Osbourne, Moses Osbourne, Samuel Smith, Richard Pike, Robert Sharpe, Robert Reid, William Lundrigan and Jessie Jones - the latter having a mill near the eastern end of the "Bridge". All of the above mills, with the exception of the Mercer mill, produced rough lumber. The Mercer mill in later years included a planer and cylinder saw. "
