Richard HILLIER III [Parents] 1, 2, 3 was born 4, 5, 6 about Feb 1858 in South Dildo or Spread Eagle, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. He died 7, 8, 9 on Oct 16 1928 in Spread Eagle, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and was buried 10 in Spread Eagle, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Richard married 11, 12 Tryphenia WHITE on Nov 09 1882 in The School Room, Norman's Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
FAMILY LORE:
1. According to family lore, as told by Mahalla (Newhook) Reid, Richard and Tryphena went to New Harbour to hold a funeral for one of their children, who had died of diphtheria. Upon returning from the funeral service they learned that another child had died. Tragically, Richard and Tryphena lost three children, in three consecutive days, all to diphtheria. All three children were buried in New Harbour or Spread Eagle.
2. Richard Hillier (a fisherman), Tryphena White (his wife), and their children, Robert Hillier (Richard's brother) and his wife Jane White (Tryphena's sister), and their children lived in one house in Spread Eagle. Richard and Tryphena's house had burned down before 1921. After Tryphena died in 1907 and after Robert died; Richard and Jane raised all the children as one family.
3. An Arthur Hillier, who is currently living in Old Shop (probably a later descendant of Richard) married Rita, who was a teacher in Spread Eagle.

Charles NEWHOOK [Parents] 1, 2, 3 was born 4, 5, 6 on Oct 25 1858 in Chance Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. He died 7, 8, 9 on May 18 1948 and was buried 10 in Anglican Cemetery, Old Shop, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Charles married 11 Mary Hannah OSBOURNE on Dec 24 1888 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
MARRIAGE:
1. Per Bonnie (Newhook) Wells - Per transcription of New Harbour Parish Records at Nfld. Archives:
"Charles Newhook, bachelor of Old Shop, mar. Mary Anna Osbourne, Dec. 24,1888. St. Augustine's Church, New Hr."
BURIAL:
1. Per headstones in Anglican Cemetary in Old Shop, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
Charles Newhook Mary Anna
d. May 18, 1948 , age 91 d. Aug 17, 1950, age 832. Per NGB's list of the index of Stonepics Database Version 4.0 for Surnames "Murrin to Nosal"
"NF110 : OLS01 NEWHOOK, Charlie (1948) & Mary Ann - 1 photo"
NF= Newfoundland, OLS = Old Shop
CENSUS:1. The 1921 Census of Old Shop includes the following:
NEWHOOK Charles; M; Head; Married; 1844; Oct; 66; Chance Cove
NEWHOOK Mary A.; F; Wife; Married; 1865; Jul; 56; Island Cove
NEWHOOK William R.; M; Son; Single; 1894; Oct; 27; Old Shop
NEWHOOK Charles; M; Son; Single; 1890; Jun; 21; Old Shop2. The 1921 Census lists Charles' birth as Oct. 1844 and that he was 66 at the time of the Census. This doesn't calculate. His headstone in Old Shop's Anglican Cemetary says that he died May 18, 1948, age 91. If he was born in October as the Census indicates, then his year of birth would be 1856. I am more inclined to believe the headstone, as the transcription of the Census is riddled with errors.
3. In the "History of Old Shop" (aka "Old Shop: Past and Present" printed in August 1983) the Voters List of 1889, lists a Charles Newhook from Come by Chance (not resident).
4. The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador confirms that the Old Shop Newhook's came from Chance Cove, although it implies that Newhooks were in Old Shop earlier than is stated in the History of Old Shop.
NOTES:
1. Shirley Newhook believes Charles died about 1950. She remembers their house, but doesn't remember them. Shirley remembers seeing a picture of Joyce Newhook as a young child, looking out of the window of their house. Their house was located next to Kevin and Lynn's house. Dot and Clyde Cooper's house is now located on the site.
2. According to his grandaughters, Mahalla and Julia, he was born on October 25, 1858.
3. Bridget (Janes) Power of Chapel Arm has researched the Newhook family. She wrote the book The Newhooks of Norman's Cove (1987). I saw this book at the Arts and Culture Centre Library in St. John's and it doesn't mention 'our' Newhooks.
4. According to Charlotte Newhook and Shirley Newhook Bishop:
Newhook, Charles J.P. 1834 - Justice of the Peace? - relation to us unknown.
Charles & Mrs. Sarah Newhook - 1871 - relation to us unknown.
Samuel Newhook's siblings (from note found in a trunk in his house) are Charles, Julie (died 2 years old), Wille Rob (worked at Balmoral Hotel in Sudbury), Mary Jane, and John Samuel (died 18 mos)
Charles Newhooks father was John Newhook m. Sarah UNKNOWN.
Another reference to John Newhook as father to Charles Newhook.
Charles Newhook moved to Old Shop, as a child, with his father.
Mary Hannah OSBOURNE [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5, 6 in Jul 1867 in Island Cove, Newfoundland. She died 7 on Aug 17 1950. Mary married 8 Charles NEWHOOK on Dec 24 1888 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
NOTES:
1. Aunt Mahalla (Newhook) Reid has a photograph of Mary Anna Osborne Newhook with her grandson Edgar Hynes Jr. standing outside of their home in Old Shop or Spreadeagle. The picture shows how poor the family was - a tattered set of lace curtains hangs in the small window of the small weathered grey home.
2. Per e-mail Aug 13 2002 from Ray Drover:
"Mary Anna Osbourne was a well known Mid-Wife in the Normans Cove/Old Shop area. This is from info passed to me by Eva (Newhook) Drover."
They had the following children:
M i John Samuel NEWHOOK 1, 2, 3 was born 4, 5, 6, 7 on Jan 06 1890 in Old Shop, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and was christened 8 on Jan 13 1890 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. He died 9, 10 before 1893 and was buried 11, 12 in Anglican Cemetery, New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.

NOTES:
1. Per family members: Willie Rob was born in Old Shop. At some point the family lost contact with him. From family members, notes found in a trunk in his brother Samuel's home, and from a letter and death certificate received by Shirley (Newhook) Bishop from a funeral home in Sudbury, Ontario, we learn that Willie Rob left Newfoundland in 1926 and moved to Sudbury, Ontario where he lived at 82 Beech Street East and worked for the Balmoral Hotel. William Robert died at St. Joseph's Hospital, in Sudbury, at age 69 on December 27, 1961. He is buried in the Park Lawn Cemetary in Sudbury. At one time Willie Rob lived with the widow? Sarah Ferguson, a Newfoundlander. Although Willie Rob never came back home, reportedly Sarah did come to Newfoundland and visit with his family here. Apparently she came with a son (who is not believed to be Willie Rob's).M iii Samuel NEWHOOK F iv Mary Jane NEWHOOK M v Charles NEWHOOK F vi Julia Ann NEWHOOK 1 was born 2 about Feb 24 1904.
