NOTES:

1. Per Pat Stewart's Reid Family File: "At this point, October 12, 2000, facts are sketchy. It appears Stephen who was born 1816 and died in 1888 may have a son named Stephen James who was the father of Edgar Reid born in 1871 to continue this branch. It is possible that Stephen born 1816 could be Edgar's father but he would have been 52 years old - very possible! Edgar had other siblings however, they may have been born after him (birth dates are unknown). More research required as there could be a whole branch missing including other siblings. Birth date for Stephen at Panl shows 1819."

He had the following children:

  M i Joseph REID
  F ii Naomi REID
  M iii Jasper REID
  M iv Edgar REID
  M v Joseph Samuel REID
  M vi William REID
  F vii Florence REID

DEATH:

1. Per the St. John's Daily News Newfoundland's Roll of Honour in the Year of Events issue published on December 31, 1917: "REID, Allan, Heart's Delight. Killed in action in France, August 16, 1917."

2. Per Pat Stewart: Private Allan Roland Reid - Service # 2419 of the 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regt. died Thursday, August 16, 1917. He is remembered in the Book of Remembrance on the same page as Stephen James Reid (son of Edgar and Julie Reid). Below are the location of his burial and a history of events.

Location - Boezinge is located north of the town of Ieper on the N369 road in the direction of Diksmuide. The Cemetery is located in the Poezeistraat, east of the village. From the station turn left along the Diksmuidseweg then take the second turning right into Brugstraat. Go to the end of Brugstraat, over the bridge, and straight on along Molenstraat. Poezelstraat is the second turning on the right after the bridge and the cemetery is on the right hand side, about 200 metres from the junction of Molenstraat.

Historical Information - Boezinge lies on the West side of the Yser Canal. The village was, until July 1917, directly faced by the German front line on the East side; but in the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, begun on July, the British front was pushed forward. The Guards Division captured Artillery Wood, a copse on the North side of the railway to Thourout. Artillery Wood Cemetery was begun by the Guards Division after the fight. It was used as a front-line cemetery until March 1918. It contained, at the time of the Armistice, 141 graves ( of which 42 belonged to the Royal Artillery); but it was then greatly enlarged by the concentration of graves from the battlefields and small cemeteries of 1914-1918 on all sides of Boezinge. There are now over 1,000, 1914-1918 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over 500 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to twelve soldiers from the United Kingdom, known or believed to be buried in the cemetery. The cemetery covers an area of 4,441 square metres and is enclosed on the road side by a red brick wall and on the other sides by a low curb. The more important of the small cemeteries concentrated into Artillery Wood Cemetery were the following: BOESINGHE CHATEAU GROUNDS CEMETERY, on the South-West side of the road between the village and the station, containing 19 graves of soldiers from the United Kingdom (mainly of the Guards Division) who fell in June-August 1917. The Chateau grounds contained other British graves, now removed to Artillery Wood Cemetery, and also a French Military Cemetery. BRISSEIN HOUSE CEMETERY, BIXSCHOOTE, 2 kilometres North of Langemarck village, a French Military Cemetery in which 22 soldiers from the United Kingdom were buried in December 1917-March 1918. CAPTAIN'S FARM CEMETERY, LANGEMARCK, 2.4 kilometres West of Langemarck village, a group of graves in which 63 soldiers from the United Kingdom were buried in July 1917-March 1918, chiefly by the Guards and 29th Divisions.
