Probate granted to Mary Elizabeth Rutherford Dec 13/19.
Estate sworn at $3582.81Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.

DEATH:
1. The St. John's Daily News (as transcribed by Chris Shelley) for Tues. July 2, 1907 on the NGB Website includes the following obituary notice:
"HARBOR GRACE NEWS - It was an unlooked for announcement, on Friday afternoon, when it was made known that Mrs. Sarah RUTHERFORD, wife of our aged and esteemed townsmen. Mr. Andrew RUTHERFORD, had entered the dark vale of Death, and had passed from it unto Life, at 1:30 p.m. that day. Mrs. RUTHERFORD was 78 years of age, and was ill only a few days, heart trouble seems to have been the cause of her death. Though ailing for several days, and suffering considerable pain at times, her condition was not considered grave by the members of her family, and even when the dread messenger summoned her hence, her daughters did not realize that the end had come. Mrs. RUTHERFORD leaves a husband, two daughters (Mrs. W. WARD and Miss Mary RUTHERFORD), and a circle of numerous friends to mourn an irreparable loss. The deceased lady was the daughter of Mr. Thomas MOORE, of Dildo. She had just completed her 50 years of wedded life, and her friends were hoping that several more years would be added to them. Mrs. RUTHERFORD was widely known for her kindness of heart, her womanly qualities, her charitable disposition, and the deep interest she always took in church work and deeds of mercy. Truly, this was a good woman. Her "Footprints in the sands of Time" will be traced for many years to come, by those who are disposed to follow in her steps. The funeral takes place tomorrow at 4 p.m.."

The Annual Examination of this School took place, according to announcement, on Tuesday last, in the presence of a large assemblage of our leading citizens - the parents and friends of the pupils.
The various classes were subjected by Miss Flemming, their accomplished Preceptress, to a prolonged and most searching examination on the several branches of Arithmetic, Grammar, Geography and English History; and we can
say, without exaggeration, that in all branches, they acquitted themselves not simply to the satisfaction, but to the admiration and delight of all who were present on the occasion. We never heard better readers in any school. Specimens of Penmanship were produced which could scarcely be excelled. The following is a list of the prizes awarded:

BIOGAPHY:
1. From Charles G. Strong's website:
"From Cyril Wellington Strong's memoirs "My Life as a Newfoundland Union Organizer":
"My father, Ralph Frederick William Strong, was born at Twillingate, Newfoundland, into a family of three sons and three daughters."
"My father had left home at sixteen, to go to sea. At the turn of the century, he was in Alaska and the Yukon during the gold rush, where apparently he made a fortune digging gold. Like many who made fortunes there, he considered himself a financier, using his money to promote various companies. He managed to spend or lose all his money before he died in November, 1922, leaving his wife and family penniless."
"A newspaper account of the wedding notes that 'Molly Newhook was marrying Millionaire Strong'."
"My father had been married previously, in British Columbia, and was divorced."
"... he was buried in the General Protestant Cemetary", in St. John's."
"In June 1924 we moved to St. John's where my mother rented a house and established a boarding house, the Imperial Hotel ... which was up over Knowlings West End store on Water Street ... Around the end of 1925, Uncle Jim and Aunt Minnie came to town from Botwood and wanted to adopt my brother and me. ... My mother would not even consider adoption but she did agree that we could go to Botwood for the winter."
"My mother, nee Martha Penny Rolenda Newhook, was the daughter of a miner who worked in the mine at Tilt Cove, Notre Dame Bay, until it closed. He then moved to St. John's and worked as a carpenter. I understand the family had moved to Tilt Cove from Jackson's Arm, White Bay. I do not know in which place my mother was born, but she was reared at Tilt Cove along with three brothers and two sisters."
