ABOUT CATTISTOCK:
1. Cattistock is described on "The Dorset Pages" (http://www.thedorsetpage.com/locations/place/C070.htm) as follows:
"Cattistock is a happy mixture of brick and stone cottages, especially in the centre, the triangle in front of the church where thatch and nice window moldings identify the old ones from the more recent. The earthworks on Castle Hill overlooking the village defy dating, but King Alfred’s grandson, Athelstan, gave land hereabouts to the monks in return for their prayers.
The pride of Cattistock was its renowned carillon of 35 bells cast in Louvain, the first in England. Their mellow tones rang out over this large village, with a church more befitting a city. Alas they were destroyed in a fire in the tower in 1939. The church however remains one of the finest 19th century churches in Dorset. The north and south transepts are 15th century, but the body of the church was virtually rebuilt in 1857 by Sir Gilbert Scott. The north aisle and tower were added in 1874 and designed by his son George Gilbert Scott. Externally the tower is stunning, huge and visible for miles around. After the fire, the upper part of the tower was rebuilt in the 1950's by Arts and Crafts architect J.S. Brockerly who is buried in the churchyard. A feature of the fine church tower used to be an enormous clock face which spanned the whole width of the tower, but it has been replaced with a face of more normal proportions.
Cattistock is also home to the Cattistock Hunt, and the baying of the hounds can still be heard around the village. But with the increasing anti-blood sports sentiment, one wonders for how much longer."
POSSIBLE ANCESTRAL LINKS:1. The Highland Homepage (http://users.deltanet.com/~hilander/gen/D0001/G0000018.html#I5409) includes a William Bishop (of William Bishop), b. 13 MAY 1570, Holway Manor, Cattistock, England, d. 28 AUG 1638, Holway Manor, Cattistock, England married to Alice Granville Dunning. His ancestors and descendants are listed, but do not show any connections to the Gilbert of Cattistock or the Newfoundland Bishops. There probably is some connection given the shared name and origins. Additional information found on William 1570-1638 on the English Origins of NJ Quaker Thomas Bishop (http://www.webchoice.net/users/pbishop/wbishop/friendsbishopgenealogy/england/uksrc003.htm) and Descendents of John Bysshop of England, 1424 (http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/i/s/Robert-A-Bishop/ODT21-0001.html) also offer no connection to Gilbert of Cattistock or William Bishop in Newfoundland.
Anne 1 married Gilbert BISHOP.
They had the following children:
M i Joseph BISHOP was christened on Jan 01 1737 in Cattistock, Dorset, England. M ii Joseph BISHOP was christened on Aug 24 1740 in Cattistock, Dorset, England. M iii George BISHOP was christened on Feb 20 1742 in Cattistock, Dorset, England. M iv George BISHOP
William BISHOP [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5, 6, 7 in Cattistock, Dorset, England and was christened 8 on Mar 08 1772 in Cattistock, Dorset, England. He died 9, 10 before May 19 1803 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and was buried 11, 12, 13 on May 19 1803 in (Old Cemetary in Cat Cove) New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. William married 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 Mary HILLIER on Oct 16 1799 in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.
CHRISTENING:
1. From Norman Bishop's e-mail November 30, 2000 - "I have had a quick look through the C's of Dorset and have come to the same conclusion as you, that it should be Cattistock. I have checked the Vital Records Index for the British Isles - this is on 5 CDs and contains 5 million births, baptisms and marriages taken from a partial collection not included in the IGI. From this I found : WILLIAM BISHOP, baptised 8th March 1772 at Cattistock, Dorset, the son of George Bishop and Esther."
MARRIAGE:
1. NFGenWeb's "Parish Data for Trinity Bay Area - Trinity - St. Paul's Marriage Data 1757-1820" includes the following entry for the year 1799:
" Octob(r) 16(th) Married William Bishop of the Parish of Cadstock in the County of Dorset in Great Britain & Mary Dau(r) of Jas. & M. Hillier of New Harbor in this District Planter."
2. Cadstock could be a misspelling for Cattistock, Dorset, England. Although there is also a Chardstock, Devon, England which, at one time, seems to have been part of Dorset. There is also a Chideock, Dorset that might be where he originated.
3. According to Jerome J. & Hope Hillier Michael's and Mike Cooper's websites, Mary and William were married on October 16, 1799. William was born in Gadstouk/Cadstock, Dorset, England. Jerome J. & Hope Hillier Michael's website includes a family tree by Ross Hillier that says: Mary and William (birthplace not stated) were married in Gadstouk/Cadstock, Dorset, England and that they had a son named George.

It is called the Hilliers of Trinity Bay Newfoundland, the web site is: www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/i/c/Jerome-J-Michael/. That is my compilation from Netherbury Dorset, dating to 1500. James Halyer/Hellyer died Nov. 29, 1814, buried in the original COE cemetary in New Harbour. He married Mary Thorn, daughter of John and Mary Thornton, original settlers of New Harbour. Their daughter Mary married William Bishop of Gadstouk Dorset. In the old cemetery a William Bishop was buried in 1805. They owned a fishing premises at Cat Cove, New Harbour. He appears to be the original settler. A George Bishop inherited the original premises. Sorry I have no info on Elias."
2. Per the NGB Website for the St. Paul's Anglican Church Trinity Parish Burial Register transcription for 1803:
"May 19th - Interred WM BISHOP of New Harbr in this District"
3. From Ross Hillier's e-mail January 03, 2001 - "William Bishop's headstone was in the original cemetery at Cat Cove. His stone was directly in front of the gate. I last visited that cemetery about forty years ago, when I took pictures of James Hellyer's tombstone. It was broken, but I was able to get a 35mm film. The L.I.P grant people did much damage while doing repairs. I have pictures of the original cemetery and of Cat Cove circa 1920-1930."
4. On my own visit to Cat Cove Cemetery in 2000, I was not able to find a headstone for this William, I did find one for his grandson, William (of George) and his wife Eliza.

MISCELLANEOUS:
1. Perhaps another descendant of William. The NFGenWeb site's (http://www.huronweb.com/genweb/nfdata/main_065_3.htm#vital) Spaniard's Bay Marriages C of E 1860-1866 includes the following entry:
"29 May 1866, at Spaniard's Bay, James BISHOP, Bachelor of New Harbour T. B., & Elizabeth HUTCHINGS, Spinster of Spaniard's Bay. Wit: George HUTCHINGS, James HUTCHINGS."
ARTICLES:
1. From "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland" by E. R. Seary, as copied from Larc's Dreamwater site at http://www.dreamwater.com/larc/Genealogy/. Larc's line doesn't seem to be the same as ours. Her first Newfoundlander is John from Dorset. And none of her listed descendants or their communities match ours. Larc has taken down her Bishop family chart, presumably she has found additional information and will repost it when her chart is complete. As of January 2001 - it is still down.
Bishop of Newfoundland
BISHOP, a surname of England, Scotland, Ireland and the Channel Islands, from the Old English personal name Bisc(e)op, or "a nickname for one with the appearance or bearing of a bishop, or a pageant name from the custom of electing a boy-bishop on St. Nicholas's Day" (Reaney), or one who worked in the household of a bishop; in Ireland, as a synonym by translation of MacAnespie and GILLESPIE.
