Jethro worked in the Grain elevators. On August 7, 1945 he was badly burned in an explosion and fire which cost 22 lives. Although badly injured, he helped rescue the remaining workers. He was the last to be rescued and was publicly honoured for his heroism by the Canadian Legion."

BIOGRAPHY:

1. As posted by Richard Taylor [phases1@istar.ca] to the NF-Roots list:

"An old newspaper clipping from amongst my grandmother's photos. It is from a Fort William newspaper of 1945. It is a story of Jethro REID, originally of Heart's Delight, Trinity Bay. Jethro was born in 1890 and went to Fort William with his wife Matilda PERRY of Gooseberry Islands, to work in the grain elevators. (for the youngsters....Fort William is now Thunder Bay) I thought that the researchers of the REID family of Trinity Bay would find it of interest.

Life Membership in Legion Conferred on Jethro Reid

Highlight of last night's general meeting of the Fort William Branch of the Canadian Legion was the dedication of a life membership which had been presented earlier to Comrade Jethro Reid. Comrade Reid was not able to attend the meeting.

It will be recalled that during the explosion at Saskatchewan Pool Elevator No. 5 on August 7, 1945, when 22 lives were lost, Mr., Reid was working on one of the top floors of the workhouse.

When the blast occurred he was injured seriously and if he had not been caught against a steel support would have been blown out into mid air.

His hands and face were burned badly and his eyes affected but his first thought was to render assistance to his fellow workers.

Sliding down vertical columns of cement, then down burning rope drives, one of which dropped just as he released his grip on it, he managed to get to a floor where he could help. On an adjoining elevator, 90 feet distant, a party was trying to carry out a rescue. Mr. Reid, in spite of the blood covering his face and the burns to his hands and face, did manage to grasp the small rope thrown across the gap and pulled a heavier rope across the gap and made It fast. In this way he made it possible for rescue workers to cross the 90-foot gap, at a high level above the ground, and rescue work went ahead.

Mr. Reid was the last to be rescued in this way.

In World War One Comrade Reid attained the rank of sergeant major. A member of the Fourth Machine Gun Battery, 4th Division, C.E.F., he was awarded the Military Medal for capturing single handed a German machine gun post.

The life membership was presented to Mr. Reid by Stanley Clayton, president of the Fort William branch. With Mr. Clayton at the time of the presentation was Harry Power Jr., Legion secretary.

The life membership was given by members of the Fort William branch in tribute to their Comrade's devotion to service of his fellow men, displayed twice in his lifetime, in circumstances which presented grave danger to his own person."
