BIOGRAPHY:
1. Per e-mail from Debby Lea
"The man's name is Charles Lander Newhook, 1884?-1923. I have his obituary copied out of a newspaper (which does not include the paper's name). It says he was born and died "on the old homestead, New Harbor." He was married to Lydia Head, who survived him briefly; both were buried at Green Harbour Mission in 1937. It also indicates that he left two sons and five daughters. Of those, one is listed in the Baptisms of Green's Harbour Mission: Darcy Gwendolyn Maud, 13 Aug 1908. Some of their other children were Vera Jean Cavell Newhook, Greta, Theresa, and Robert. Some- perhaps all- of the children were sent to an orphanage in Pictou, N.S. after the parents' deaths. He was also survived by "a widowed mother, a brother, Robert,in the postal telegraphs, Grand Falls, and three sisters, Mrs. Mitchell, Grand Falls, Mrs. E.L. Jerrett, Port Arthur, and Mrs. H. Osmond, Watertown, Mass." Because of the brother Robert and sister Jerrett I believe he may be the son of Charles Newhook 1834-1915 and Christina, and the grandson of Charles Newhook III 1806-1871 and Sarah Lander (which would account for his middle name.) I know "he began work at 17 in his father's shipyard," and moved into carpentry & construction work. Charles L. and family do not appear on any census that I can see, though it seems they moved around with construction work, to Grand Falls, Bishop Falls, and Edmonston, and later due to health care, to St. Agatha Des Monts sanatorium and St. John's."

1. On a website by Mark Thorne (mthorne@nf.sympatico.ca) on the History of Chapel Arm, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland (Bridget and Art Power contributors) we find the following:
"Eli Pretty came from Dildo Cove circa 1865. He owned and operated a mill located on Western Cove Brook about 1894. Eli Pretty died in 1898 and the mill was taken over by a Mr. Pelly of whom there is no information available. People of Chapel Arm are familiar with the Mill Path or the Brook Path, where many of their ancestors worked. Some of the older residents today can remember Joseph Pretty and Eli Williams, both from Chapel Arm, working at this site and they also recall the remnants of an 'old shack' where the workers ate their lunch. The land was later fenced by Jacob Reid of Chapel Arm. It was passed down to his grandson, Donald, who now resides on the property."

FIRST FAMILIES OF CHAPEL ARM
Compared to most communities around our coast, Chapel Arm is a very young settlement.
The first settler was Edward Power of County Waterford, Ireland. Edward came to Newfoundland as a young man. He spent some years in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, where he married Sarah Hoskins of that community. Sarah was baptized on December 25, 1817 at New Harbour. She was the daughter of John Hoskins and Mary Lynch.
The exact date that Edward and Sarah settled in Chapel Arm is unknown, but by the few records available, the years were 1838-1840. In early manuscripts of Trinity Bay called "The William White Collection", there is a voters' list for the year 1835-1838. For the first three years Edward voted in New Harbour. In 1838 he voted in Norman's Cove, so it is very likely that he was living in Chapel Arm at the time.
