E-mail 8/13/2000:
came across ur site very interesting. I am preparing a family in memorian booklet on my uncle who was killed in the first world war. A name William John Hillier has entered my information search. Simply put it is this. My uncle James Patrick Mallard joined the second Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment in 1914, he was killed in Belgium( Flanders Fields) in 1915. A cross reference check of records of Nfld deaths in World War l, shows a William John Hillier was also in the Eastern Ontario Regiment and that he was killed in 1918 (he won Military Medal). My investigations show that Mallard & Hillier regimentals # were 7876 & 7863. Only 13 numbers apart. Both men came from Nfld. My Uncle came from a place called Quidi Vidi in St. Johns, the record that I have dont show where in Nfld he came from (still searching) but based on what I know I am saying that both Hillier and Mallard left St. Johns together, ended up in Ottawa, Joined a Militia unit joined the Eastern Ontario Regiment when war was declared in 1914. Hopefully you can confirm if Hillier is part of the Hillier family group that you refer to. If he is not part of the Hillier family I may have added one for you. Then again if you know about him, my querry is a photograph. There are NO pictures of my uncle in existence, hopefully I can contact a relative of William Hillier who just might have a picture(s) being that both of them were in the same outfit in the war and probably the only two Newfoundlanders in the Battalion, as such they would be in close contact. I may be shooting in the dark for info, but its the only route I can follow. I trust you are aware that a Llewelyn Hillier from Lamaline, was part of the Royal Nfld Regiment and was killed in 1918 at age 18. (info I came across during my searches)

Hope we can help each other

Hi David;
I've been meaning to write you since receiving Jerry Michael's note of August 13th. The William John Hillier referred to in your e-mail is my great uncle. His brother Moses was my grandfather. They were both born in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, and are part of the Trinity Bay Hilliers on Jerry/Hope's web page.

I have received a transcript of William John Hillier's military records from the National Archives of Canada, which shows his enlistment in the 2nd Battalion, Canadian (Over-Seas) Expeditionary Force, at Valcartier, Quebec, on August 12, 1914. He sailed (to Europe) on October 4, 1914, on the S.S. Cassandra..He "Died August 13, 1918 of wounds received in action while serving with the 2nd Battalion." He is buried in Plot 6, Row C, Grave 19, of the Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur- Somme, France. He was awarded the following medals: Military Medal, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Other than the home address (New Harbour) of his parents, there is no indication of his address prior to enlistment, but it is known that he was working in Canada at the time of enlistment. If he (and the same could be assumed for your uncle) had been living in Newfoundland at the time of enlistment, it is highly likely that he would have joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (as his brother Robert did). The only picture of William John Hillier that I have shows him with his brother Robert.

From your e-mail, I'm not sure of your familiarity with Newfoundland, but you indicated that James Patrick Mallard "came from a place called Quidi Vidi in St. John's". A review of the phone listings for Mallard, show a number still living in Quidi Vidi. For your information, I'm attaching an extract from The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland & Labrador which gives information on the village.

P.S. Note to Jerry; If you want to post any of the above info on William John Hillier to his record on your web page, please do so. DGH
