George Edwin JACKSON [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3, 4 on Aug 14 1911. He died 5, 6, 7 on Mar 15 1995 in (Carbonear Hospital), Carbonear, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. George married 8 Effie ROWE in 1936.

BIOGRAPHY:

1. From the Summer 1995 issue of The Flanker:

"BRIEF REFLECTION ON THE LIFE OF MY GRANDFATHER (PA)

Born August 14, 1911, George Edwin Jackson was the only son of Martha and Jacob Jackson. When George was just nine months old, his father passed away. His early life was shared with his stepfather (Charles) and a half-sister (Lena). George did not obtain any high level of education, only as far as grade two, yet this did not stop him from becoming a successful businessman.

Years passed and George worked in the lumber woods cutting pulp wood for the paper mills. Then, in 1936, George married Effie Rowe and raised six loving children (three boys and three girls).

In the summer season George fished and owned his own schooner. When winter rolled around, he would return to the lumber woods again and cut his usual pulp wood.

The wholesale and retail business became a part of George's life in 1948, when he began his own business in Cavendish. As his children grew older, they became part of the family business. In 1955, he started a sawmill, getting involved in the logging and lumber business. This expanded into building supplies, construction and contract work. Then came an unhappy period in his life, with the sudden death of his wife in 1976. He was encouraged by family and friends to keep on working, thus opening up a new supermarket and later a hardware store.

George has many cars in his day, but his favourite was his 1984 Caprice Classic. After a suggestion from his family to take some time off from work, he bought a motor home that he dearly loved to talk about. Every weekend he
would pack the necessities, hit the road and enjoy hunting, fishing or camping. He never met a stranger in his life, but he made himself known to young and old alike.

On the weekends George didn't have much to do. He never liked to be idle; he loved to cut firewood with his power saw. There was always a hefty supply of wood in his basement.

In March, 1994, he endured a heart attack, from which he quickly recovered and was soon back to his regular lifestyle.

On March 9, 1995, he suffered another heart attack. The next morning he was admitted to ICU at Carbonear Hospital, where it was confirmed that he had tolerated a heart attack the day before. Wednesday, March 15, 1995, he awoke feeling fine, eating his breakfast and getting his shave in the washroom. When he didn't return to his bed the nurse checked the washroom and found that he had passed away. This shocked the doctors, nurses, family and friends.

George was a devoted father, grandfather, and great- grandfather who enjoyed life and lived every minute of it to the fullest." (By: Lorne Critch)
