DEATH:
1. Per Pat Stewart's notes:
"Served during WW1 as Private 1033040, with the 97th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force [Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regt.) ]. On the 20th of October, 1914, Passchendaele fell into enemy hands. On the 6th November, 1917, after the severest fighting in most unfavourable weather (rain and extremely muddy conditions), the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade took, and passed, the village; this fight was part of the Second Battle of Passchendaele, the last (3rd) of the Battles of Ypres, 1917. Stephen died on October 30, 1917, 27 days after his 21st birthday and 7 days before the success of this Battle.
He is buried at Passchendaele (Passendale) New British Cemetery which lies 10.5 kilometers north east of leper town centre on the S'Graventafelstraat, a road leading from St. Jan to Passendale. Two roads connect leper town centre onto the Zonnebeekseweg: the Torhoutstraat leads from the market square onto a small roundabout. At the roundabout the first right turn is Basculestraat. At the end of Basculestraat, there is a crossroads and Zonnebeekseweg, in the village of Zonnebeke, lies the left hand turning onto the Langermarkstraat ( further on this street name changes to Zonnebekestraat). 2 kilometers along this road, and after passing Dochy Farm New British Cemetery, lies the right hand turning onto the S'Graventafelstraat. 4 kilometers along the s'graventalfelstraat, and after passing the New Zealand Memorial, lies the cemetery on the left hand side of the road.
I have a picture of Stephen, in his uniform, which was sent by him to his sister Lavinia ( my Nan) and the metal presented to his mother after his death which she, in turn, passed along to Lavinia. I have also received a copy of the Book of Remembrance page where Stephen is listed - this copy prepared by Veteran's Affairs in Canada and is a beautiful addition to his memory and the sacrifice he made for our country and freedom.
