BIOGRAPHY:
1. A brief biographical account of Ed Newhook and family and Old Shop from information in several e-mails sent by Lorna Miles from Milesbaum@aol.com on 5/21/2001 and information from the publication "Old Shop: Past and Present" (Aug 1983):
As the child of an itinerant schoolteacher Lorna lived in many places during her lifetime, including Old Shop. As she says: "I have lived in so many places and I really have no place to call home. A lot of teachers and ministers children share the same fate." She explains: "I lived in Greeley town, Foxtrap area; Grand Falls, St Johns, Texas and back to St John's after I moved from Old Shop."
She has fond and vivid childhood memories, from about age seven or eight, of Old Shop where her father taught school and the family shared the home of Ed Newhook, as no living accommodations were provided for teachers. Lorna's father, H. J. Miles, taught at the Anglican School in Old Shop from 1944 to 1946. ["Old Shop: Past and Present"] Lorna, though not the first, is certainly generous to remark on the beauty of Old Shop by saying: "It was as pretty a place as you will find anywhere." Perhaps a more politally correct, though still complimentary statement was made by Newfoundland and Labrador's former Premier, J. R. Smallwood, who stated on July 7, 1983. "Old Shop is one of the prettiest communities in Newfoundland and the prettiest community in Trinity Bay". ["Old Shop: Past and Present" ]
From Lorna's recollection: "The Newhook house was large with a roofed bridge running the full length. Ed had a shop in one end. Outside our window were roses, lilacs and a large mountain laurel tree. The garden was large; meadow with many trees. It was great for someone growing up with a vivid imagination. I tell my grandchildren stories of that place now. They are fascinated with the large meadow area, which now has houses."
She recalls on a sad note that Ed Newhook and his second wife Florence, or Flo as she was better known, "had a baby when we were there but it was a 'blue baby' and lived for a short time. My father christened? him." It was quite common then for teachers or other educated lay-persons to perform christenings or baptisms when a minister was not available. She also mentions some of the Ed's children by his first wife: a daughter Martha Lizzie; and a son Ellis whom she believes still lives in the family home.
