FAMILY BUSINESS:
1. From the Summer 1997 issue of The Flanker:
"Hillier's Sawmill-Blaketown - Cutting Through Time
During the late 1950's, my Grandfather, Albert Hillier, started a small sawmill in Spread Eagle. During this time, machinery was not like it is today. Albert, and his brother Ray who also worked in the sawmill, used a 1946 Chevy, six cylinder car motor to drive the saw. To bring the logs to the mill from the woods, they would use a horse and sled, which would be uncommon in operations today. All logs which were cut, were cut by a buck saw and an axe. The logs were cut and brought to the mill during the winter months, when the ground was frozen, and piled for spring production.
In the spring and summer months, the logs would be sawed into lumber. The lumber which was sawed, was just rough lumber, it would be sold to local communities.
Albert and his brother Ray had the sawmill in Spread Eagle until 1966 when resettlement came there. As a result of resettlement, Albert and his family moved to Blaketown, where Albert began the construction of another sawmill (at this point his brother Ray no longer worked with him). When two of Albert's sons, Donald and Hughie, began working with him in the sawmill business the Hilliers invested in a diesel motor for the sawing, and a planer to take the roughness off the lumber. They also invested in a John Deere tractor to replace the horse and cart for hauling their logs.
The three, worked together up until five years ago when Albert retired from the sawmill business; Donald and Hughie have continued the operation. Despite some pretty hard times the Hillier brothers have maintained a viable business.
A local sawmill operation is a very challenging enterprise and prospects for the future in this area are uncertain. The Hillier brothers of Blaketown feel it is this uncertainty that will discourage others in their family from "logging on" for a future in this business. "Although the mill is very hard work, and the work is from daylight to dark, I can't see myself working at anything else", stated Hughie Hillier." (By: Mark Hillier)
