"... the dismal shore
Of cold and pitiless Labrador;
Where, under the moon, upon mounts of frost,
Full many a mariner's bones are tost." — Thomas Moore, 1804BIOGRAPHY:
1. Charlotte Newhook's notes indicate that Thomas Fitzgiben Moore from England married UNKNOWN in the 1700s and had at least one child named Edward.
2. Per "The Newhooks of Norman's Cove" by Bridget (Janes) Power, 1987, page107: "May 16, 1827. North Circuit court. Charles Newhook sued Thomas K. Moore for 19 pounds, damages for slander. Defendant did not appear. Judgement by default, jury to access damages. Moore accused Charles of employing an Irish Blacksmith to make pikes to destroy the country. This was probably Charles II of New Harbour. This information was found at the Maritime History Archives, St. John's."
3. There were several different court proceedings between Thomas Fitzgibbon Moore and Charles Newhook II detailed in Potheads & Drumhoops: A folk history of New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland by Garry Cranford & Raymond Hillier (ISBN 0-9698767-2-6, Flanker Press, St. John's, NF, 1995).
4. Found the following on a Moore family website in the UK, but have not been able to verify all the details: From Gloria Moore Healey - mailto:johnhealey@thezone.net -Wednesday October 20th, 1999 at 07:28:36 "Thomas Fitzgibbons came by ship out of Belfast, I'm not sure of the date. He jumped ship in St. John's Newfoundland & to hide from the authorities he took his mother's maiden name of Moore. He settled in the Trinity Bay area of Newfoundland. Some of his decendants are still in the area. Some have become far flung! He was a member of Newfoundland's parliament in the 1800's. Some info should be available at the Newfoundland Provincial Archives if it would be of any benefit to you."
5. Found the following on the RootWeb forums:
From: UNCLE ELI
Subject: MOORES
Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 09:02:53 -0230Just passing along this little tid-bit that washed ashore:
The old man's people originate from Dildo, Trinity Bay. You might have got this story from him sometime in the past, but i'll tell you again anyway: the first of our family over from Ireland was Thomas Moore Fitzgibbon, who switched his names around after he came over. Whether he had some relation to a Moore family in Ireland is unknown to us. Thomas was in the first Newfoundland Responsible Government, IIRC.
Might be of use to someone. Tony
6. Barbara Pederson reported, from Decks Awash Jan/Feb 1990: "Newhook who was born in Trinity in 1783 and settled briefly at New Harbour around 1800 before moving to Norman's Cove. ... Born at Trinity in 1789, he had 21 children from two marriages. James and his brother Charles had a shipyard at New Harbour, but they fell out and James moved to Norman's Cove where he was joined by Thomas Moore of Dildo. ... Amelia Newhook, a daughter from James Newhook's second marriage, married John Smith from Chance Cove at the same time."7. A news item from 1811 (presumably the St. John's daily newspaper) includes the following: "DESERTED - George Prosser Goss, age 16 or 17, 5 ft., 1 in., light hair, fair complexion. Fore finger on right hand is crooked. (2 July) - From Thomas Bulley & Co., St. John's, Michael Carroll, Thomas Fogarty, Thomas Kenny, Martin Leahy, Thomas Moore, and Richard Phelan. Take notice, their passage has not been paid. (2 July)"
8. From the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador (ENL): "Moore, Thomas Fitzgibbon - (fl.1822-1843). Constable; politician. According to family tradition, Moore was originally known as Thomas Fitzgibbon and came to the New Harbour, Trinity Bay area from Ireland or France in the early 1800s. By 1822 he was a constable at Dildo, having married a Miss George of that place.
Moore was apparently something of a free spirit and frequently clashed with the Newhook family, prominent shipbuilders and merchants of New Harbour. Perhaps as a result of this feud, he also had some standing as an advocate of political reform among the residents of Trinity Bay. In 1836 he was elected MHA for Trinity Bay as reformer/Liberal, a circumstance which elicited much comment by conservative interests about the ``very inferior set'' of members returned. The election was later annulled, but not before the ``celebrated Tom Fitz-Gibbon Moore'' entered local political lore. Prowse further described him as ``a wild, eccentric individual'' who would ``walk from his home to the Assembly every session, carrying his `nunny' bag on his back.'' Sources: Garry Cranford (1983), D.W. Prowse (1895), E.R. Seary (1977), DNLB (1990). "
9. Per D.W. Prowse's "History of Newfoundland" (http://enl.cuff.com/) page 438: "The first House of Asembly by statute, ended in 1836. The elections of this year were very hotly contested; there were riots at Harbour Grace and all around Conception Bay, and great disturbances in St. John's. The Attorney-General indicted a number of persons for riot and assault; six of these were members of the House of Assembly. There was not a tittle of evidence to sustain the charges against the members, and they were acquitted. In the other cases, the sentences passed by Chief Justice Boulton were considered so unnecessarily severe that they were remitted by the Home Government. The most preposterous proceeding of all was the disannulling of the 1836 elections, on the ground that one returned writ was unsealed.(2) Both Boulton and Attorney-General Simms declared the elections invalid. New writs were ordered; at the second contest the Conservatives or Protestants made no fight, and a very inferior set of members were returned, one of them being the celebrated Tom Fitz-Gibbon Moore, of Dildo. (Note #3: Tom Fitz-Gibbon Moore used to walk from his home to the Assembly every session, carrying his "nunny" bag on his back; a wild, eccentric individual, he was as excited as an Indian bravo over the arrest of Judge Lilly. Only one of his many speeches has come down to us. His father was a soldier, and Tom had been a drummer in the Navy; in one of his famous orations he described himself "As born in the Glorious British Army, reared in the Navy, and Musician under our most gracious Sailor King." A rival of Moore's--Dwyer--was the Hon. Member for Lion' Den, Fogo.)"
(*fl.= flouruit (``flourished'') - a period of activity where precise dates are not known / *DNLB = Dictonary of Newfoundland and Labrador Biography (1990). / *Per Dictionary of Newfoundland English (http://www.heritage.nf.ca/dictionary/): nunny-bag n also ninny bag, nonny. 10. Per Shirley's notes - the Blarney Stone Cafe at 38 Erie Street, Festival Square in Stratford Ontario (519) 271-0321, has a picture and write up about John Arthur Thomas Moore, possibly a relative.
11. From "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland", by E.R. Seary (corrected edition): "MOOR(E)(S), surnames of England, MUIR, Mure, Mo(o)r(e), of Scotland, Moore of Ireland, from a personal name More, Old French Maur, Latin Maurus - a Moor or dark as a Moor, swarthy, the name of a 6th century saint, or from the English place names Moor(e) (Devon), Moore (Cheshire), More (Shropshire), or from Old English mor -(dweller on or near the) moor, marsh, fen, waste land; in Ireland also for (O)More, Ó Mórdha, Ir. mordha - majestic. "Souls Of The Righteous Are In...(Tall white stone standing in open grassy area just inside fence - carved top of stone comes to a rounded point - see photo - stone has been reset into a concrete base that obscures the remainder of the verse)
JLB, more likely Thomas (jr) was 77 years old at death therefore born abt 1820 not 1853, this makes more sense because his father died in 1847 and his mother would have been 52 in 1853 which is a little late for childbirth, need to re-examine the headstone to be certain of the date.
