BIOGRAPHY:
1. From the 1993 issue of The Flanker:
"MIDDLE RIDGE - GRANNIE REMEMBERS
OLDSHOP -- Middle Ridge was a small community just a few miles from Spread Eagle where nine families lived and now is the sight of two summer cabins.
Mrs. Mary Cooper, or Aunt Polly, as she is often called, was once a resident of Middle Ridge. She moved there in 1919 at the age of 19, just after getting married. Mrs. Cooper, who grew up in Old Shop, remembers that, as a women resident of Middle Ridge, she usually began her day at 4:30 am. and from then on was a busy one filled with washing and putting out clothes, washing and putting fish on the flakes, and taking care of pigs, hens, ducks, sheep, cows, and seven children. The men? They were out fishing or cutting logs.
Middle Ridge, due to its isolation, did not have a church and never saw the minister in winter; at best, the minister would stop by once or twice during the summer months. A school was built in Middle Ridge in the early 1920's. Rev. Cracknell was the station minister, who like most clergy at that time, was responsible for the school being started. Middle Ridge, also, did not have a doctor; instead it had a midwife. Mrs. Cooper remembers Mrs. Hillier of Spread Eagle helping her born all seven of her children. All winter supplies were brought in the spring in Norman's Cove or more commonly in New Harbour. Because of limited transportation, the winter months were often long; in summer, residents travelled by horse, foot or boat, which, in addition to its use for fishing, often brought the families across the bay to Dildo.
In 1938, Mrs. Cooper and her family were the first to leave Middle Ridge. They moved to Dildo. Shortly after, the other eight families also moved to communities such as Chapel Arm, Spread Eagle and Old Shop. The reason the Cooper's left was because Mrs. Cooper's husband, Charles, needed someone to fish with and her children were too small; and her husband's brother, Alfred, who lived in Dildo, also needed a fishing partner.
Today Mrs. Cooper, at the age of ninety-three, has little regrets of having left Middle Ridge. She wanted her family to go to "prayers" regularly, her children to go to Sunday school regularly and to have better opportunity to gain an education. Today, Grannie remembers the hard work she did, the hardships she overcame, the beautiful scenery and landscape of Middle Ridge and often laughs at the little stories she remembers and relates from Middle Ridge, the community that quickly faded away, but never has been forgotten.
