Major cinema complexes are at the Avalon Mall and the Topsail Road Sobey's Square mall. Some MUN film society films, many international, are now held in one of the Avalon Mall cinemas on Sunday afternoons during term.
Some theatres are the Arts and Culture Centre (big local and touring acts, including much music, including the high calibre local symphony), and the L.S.P.U. Hall (lots of great local theatre, dance and music acts). Some shows are also held at the Holy Heart of Mary auditorium and others.
There is now a Fringe Festival here; I'll insert the 2002 dates when someone lets me know or when I find out.
Outdoor theatre sometimes takes place at The Murray Premises courtyard in summer, or at the outdoor theatre in Bowring Park or sometimes at Cape Spear.

Over on Bell Island, I think in the old mineworks, First Light Productions runs a theatrical historical show and tour though I think only during tourist season.
Outside of St. John's, there is the Stephenville festival, a major theatre festival. There are also several historical theatre pageants, including one in Trinity and I think one in Carbonear, around the province.
